May 13, I began my internship at WDAM News 7 in Moselle, MS. At the station I learned several things I know for certain I will use once I graduate.

I can produce a show using ENPS. I first login into Oasis (CNN) and NBC news channel, which are news outlets that are affiliated with the station and gives them permission to use their content for shows. I search to find consumer segments, entertainment, medical, and even good news that will help build the show. Also, if there is a national story trending, often I think of ways to localize it. Once I pick stories, I request the file then download it into the raw video repository drive. I then open EDIUS, the editing software, to cut and edit the footage how it is described to be in the rundown then export it into the show.

When it is time for showtime, I go into the control room to make sure the teleprompter is loaded, and I open ENPS for the rundown of the show. I keep a watch of the rundown to keep up with the times in each block to let weather, anchors, and if a reporter is LIVE when to standby. When the show makes it into the “D” block, normally the last block of the show, I begin to count everyone down from total time in show, and talents know how much time they have to say goodbye to the viewers. In the control room not only did I produce but I also shadowed directors to get an overview of what they do. I got the opportunity to run the board for animation, graphics, and supers (lower thirds).

I have shadowed MMJs where I got the opportunity to shoot footage to create stories. Before I begin to record, I check to make sure both internal sound and mic is on. I do that because the internal sound is good for Nat sound and I can always edit the mic sound out. While shooting, it is important to get a lot of video than not enough, B-roll is very important when it comes to telling a story. My favorite shots are closeups because it adds more detail to the story. As an MMJ I know you will not always make it back to the station to edit your package to load into the show, and that is when “editing in the field” takes place. I have learned to edit footage, write scripts, and load it all into the show as I would in the news room, the only difference is it’s on a laptop in a news car.
